Since then-mayor Pete Wilson's aggressive campaign to revitalize San Diego's downtown area in the early 1970's, the area has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, the downtown area, overlooking majestic San Diego Bay, is cultural center of commerce, the arts, and a lively fine dining and nightlife scene. The addition of the unique Horton Plaza in 1985 solidified the downtown area as San Diego's premier shopping and tourist destination. Downtown and harborside residential developments, as well as the recent addition of a major Ralph's supermarket on Market Street, have endeared the area as an upscale, desirable place to reside. As San Diego's downtown continues to prosper and grow, as evidenced by such new developments as the new multi-plex theater in the Gaslamp Quarter, the area will continue to be a beacon to natives and visitors alike.
