A Passion for Fashion
Kicking off last night, Fashion Week San Diego continues this weekend
Fashion Week San Diego kicked off last night at On Broadway, downtown. Models sprawled on a red leather couch, looking completely at ease as photographers snapped away, and the pumping beat of a live deejay kept adrenaline high as beautiful people mingled over drinks. The looks were dynamic: a man with tattoos peeking out of his V-neck and a chain looped on his skinny jeans chats with a woman in a white, beaded corset and a floor-length matching skirt so tight it inhibits her ability to walk. The game is simple: Dress to impress.
The VIP party was the first of the four-day affair, culminating tonight with the spring 2009 runway show showcasing 14 designers and their eight best looks from San Diego and Mexico at the recently opened KIN Lounge at the Manchester Grand Hyatt at 6 p.m.
For Allison Andrews, director of Fashion Week, it is a dream a year and a half in the making. Only 24 years old, Andrews was the first to be motivated to bring big names and style to San Diego. “Fashion is coming and growing,” she says. “The support in the community was there, I just had to bring it all together.”
Inspired by the creative vision and unique collections of top designers in Mexico, Andrews decided to go one step further and contacted independent artists, such as Siga Rosa and Ivette Alaniz, to partake in the gala. Beyond bringing attention to the bold and daring pieces south of the border, Andrews wanted to challenge the stigma that many hold of Mexico. She contacted the new mayor, Jorge Ramos, and was pleased with how helpful and enthusiastic he was throughout the process.
Tonight, expect to see scores of colors, especially jewel tones. Spring 2009 style is all about popping yellows, purples and greens. The looks will range from classic to avant-garde, but will undoubtedly push the envelope. Go to scope out the hottest trends or to gawk at the outlandish attire, but don’t miss out.
Fashion Week San Diego runs through Sunday. Tonight, tickets are available for the runway show at the door for $70. KIN Lounge in the Manchester Grand Hyatt, One Market Place, downtown. fashionweeksd.com.

This was the worst fashion event I've ever been to - the designers were amazing, but the event production was a mess. This girl needs to get more experience before trying to take on something so large again. San Diego Magazine - bring us a REAL fashion week!
