Spicy Pickle Opens In Little Italy

The pickles really are spicy.

July 3:  The pickles really are spicy. The slightly randy-monikered Spicy Pickle deli adds a pickle to every sandwich order. “The spice recipe is a secret,” says Morgan Garofalo, VP of business development for the Denver-based chain of eateries.

San Diego’s first Spicy Pickle is in Little Italy, at the corner of Beech and Union on the ground floor of the Aperture condo building. Another Pickle will go into the East Village’s Icon building in December; Vista gets one next year.

Breads and cookies are baked fresh every morning. Most condiments are made from scratch. I’d been partial to the Santa Cruz sub (mesquite turkey, avocado, corn relish, cheddar and chipotle mayo). But my eyes have been opened to the Englishman (roast beef, horseradish coleslaw, cheddar and Thousand Island dressing).

The Pickle also serves paninis, pizzettis (thin-crust pizzas), salads and soups (try the loaded baked potato). If you’re not embarrassed to mouth it at the counter, ask for the Double Dilly-Yo deal—half a sandwich plus a soup or salad.

The Pickle is open for lunch and dinner. Lunch gets a line out the door; dinner is not happening, yet.  I picked up a plastic VIP (Very Important Pickle) card at the counter, but have been unsuccessful in three tries at spicypickle.com to register the card and start qualifying for freebies. What up?

But you’ll like the eatery’s employees—it’s not Ritz-Carlton service, but they make an effort. If it’s available, cozy up to the signature, pickle-shaped/colored table. It’s the one time you’ll be happy to be in a pickle.

The food is great and not too pricey. I wish there were a few more locations as do not get down town all that often. But if you are looking for an alternative to the lame footlong at Subway, I would give it a try.

There has been a Spicy Pickle in Poway for at least 1 to 2 years (Community @ Poway Rd). Food is good but a little over-priced.
