The Joy of Girard

A blooming interior-design scene in La Jolla entices with everything from gorgeous textiles to the latest in modern furnishings

The Joy of Girard

It’s official. Banners now line Girard Avenue proclaiming its new identity— La Jolla Design District—to draw attention to the abundance of furniture showrooms and interior design–related businesses on the eastern blocks of the prestigious street.

“As a design district, we’re experiencing the biggest growth and infusion of energy,” says Chad Patton, who owns Material Things. “This is really the only place in San Diego you can come to for high-end interior design, from designers and architects—the people who do it—to furniture to hardware to bed-and-bath, down to the home accessories, such as china and art.”

Though there are some traditional furnishings, La Jolla’s niche is contemporary. It’s a growing market in San Diego, especially given the number of luxury condos and lofts being built downtown.

This year, the fourth annual “What’s Up Girard,” to be held on September 8, will be bigger than ever. In past years, the design event showcased only large, contemporary showrooms. Now it’s open to every store with an interior-design focus. “We’ve gotten to know one another,” Patton says. “We have complementary businesses. The closer we work together, the better it is for all of us. And we do work together. If someone comes in looking for a glass-top table, and I don’t have it, I’ll refer them to Roche-Bobois. They’ll refer people to me for cushions.”

“What’s Up Girard 2007” will emphasize education, with design seminars and speakers. Stores will be auctioning off interior accessories in a month-long silent auction. Certain showrooms will host invitation-only evening soirées with food, cocktails and entertainment; those attending daily seminars will be invited to these exclusive events.

“The real difference this year is that we’re banding together as a district,” says spokesperson Heidi Hageman. “This is really the official launch, an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the best Girard has to offer in a social setting.” For more information, contact Hageman at 619-795-0151.
